Fall into a new style

18 September 2007 2 Comments

planning your new season wardrobeA change of season is a great time to update your style, but you don’t have to be embarrassed on a television show to get a makeover. You can start right now — whether you need a brand new wardrobe or just a few pieces to update your look.

Here’s how can you give yourself an update for both the changing season and trends…

Get inspired

The first step is to figure out what your goal is. What do you dislike about your current style? Is it too dated? Too frumpy? Too revealing? Take notes; writing things out is a great way to organize your thoughts when you need to analyze a problem.

Think about whose style you admire: perhaps a celebrity, a friend or even some unknown model in a magazine ad. What does their style say to you? What pieces in particular are vital in sending that message? By the time you go shopping, you should have a basic idea of what look you’re going for, as well as a list of some pieces that will be help you get there.

Change your habits

Plan a slow and steady change unless you have a lot of time and a big budget — or manage to get on a makeover show on television! Going slow will also let you adjust to the new style. It’s no surprise that some of the people featured on television makeover shows do end up going back to their old ways.

Like a good weight loss program, a wardrobe transformation takes time and means changing your habits. If you stick to the plan, you will see results; the key is to have a goal in mind and then only buy pieces that move you in that direction, instead of more of the same stuff you already have.

It’s easy to buy pieces similar to ones we already have because we feel comfortable in them. Instead, ask yourself when you go to purchase a piece of clothing or accessory: “Does this fit with my new style?” If you can, shop with a friend who can remind you of your goal. I’ve brought pals along on recent shopping trips to keep me away from black and white, since I already have plenty of those colors in my wardrobe right now.

Don’t neglect your accessories

While shopping, be on the lookout for accessories such as jewelry, bags, and shoes that go with your new style. Changing your accessories alone can make a huge difference. Just consider the difference made by trading in sneakers for stylish flats! Because accessories can be worn more often than clothing, they can be a cost-effective way to change your look.

Waste not

A style makeover doesn’t necessarily mean getting rid of all of your old clothes: that can get expensive! Just go through your current wardrobe and find out which pieces work as part of your new style. If you have a lot of nice basic pieces, you will probably be able to reuse a lot of them.

Now is also a great time to experiment with combining your old clothes in new ways, which is why I don’t suggest getting rid of your old clothes. That old sleeveless dress that shows off too much dreaded armpit fat might be a killer piece once again when you pair it with a new sleeveless jacket.

Depending on how you feel about your old clothes, you may choose to purge your closet of pieces that don’t fit into your new style, or simply move them out of where you keep your day-to-day clothes. Either way, you should end up with a wardrobe that reflects your style goals and is free of clutter.
